A Denver, Colorado police officer was shot early Wednesday morning. At approximately 4 a.m. Wednesday morning, a Denver police officer was parked in his patrol vehicle at a local hotel. The officer observed a man enter the hotel. A few moments later, the man exited the hotel, drew a pistol and ambushed the officer, who was still seated in his vehicle. The officer was able to exit his vehicle, seek cover, and return fire. During the exchange of gunfire, the officer, who was wearing a ballistic-resistant vest, was struck multiple times. Officers responding to the scene found both the officer and the suspect down from the injuries they sustained.

Both the assailant and the officer were transported to a local hospital. The shooter was pronounced dead at the hospital from his injuries. The officer, who was struck three times on his ballistic-resistant vest—twice in the back and once in the chest—was treated for non-life-threatening injuries and is in stable condition. At a press conference, Denver Police Division Chief Rick Kyle stated, “All of the rounds were stopped by the bulletproof vest that he was wearing.”
