A Douglas County, Nevada sheriff's deputy is recovering in a local hospital after he was shot several times during a traffic stop on Sunday night.

During a traffic stop shortly after 11 p.m. on December 20, a passenger in the vehicle was identified as a fugitive. When deputies attempted to arrest the passenger, he opened fire on the deputies, shooting one of them three times. The deputy was shot twice in the chest and once in the face near the cheek. Police say body armor stopped the shots to the chest. The deputy was taken to a local hospital, where he underwent surgery and is recovering in stable condition.

In the ensuing crossfire between the suspect and deputies, the suspect was shot in the hand. He was taken into custody and received medical attention before he was taken to the Carson City Jail, where he was booked on multiple charges including battery with a deadly weapon on a protected person. The driver of the vehicle was also arrested and charged with harboring and aiding a felony offender.
